Hastings since the last race
December 5, 2025: thoroughbred racing at Hastings ended, with immediate effect, after running since 1889. Hastings Casino and its simulcast racebook continue on the same ground.
The end of the track
1889: the racetrack at Hastings opened for business as East Park. It was long known as Exhibition Park. Thoroughbred racing ran there from that first year. The name changed; the sport did not, until 2025. The ground sits in Hastings Park, at 188 N Renfrew St.
October 19, 2025: the last live race of the 2025 season was run. December 5, 2025: thoroughbred racing at Hastings ended, with immediate effect.
January 31, 2026: the province stopped sharing slot revenue with the racing industry. Great Canadian Entertainment said racing at Hastings was no longer economically feasible. Hastings Casino and its simulcast racebook were left on the same ground.
What is left at Hastings
Hastings Casino remains at 188 N Renfrew St. Its hours run Sunday to Thursday 11 AM to 12 AM, and Friday and Saturday 11 AM to 2 AM. Holiday hours should be checked on the venue's site. The floor is slot machines only: no table games, no poker room.
The simulcast racebook shows races from elsewhere, on a monthly schedule. Jerome's, a casual restaurant, sits off the racebook. An indoor lounge has a full-service bar and a stage. The Clubhouse opened only during live racing.
June 6, 2025: Tsleil-Waututh Nation signed a memorandum of understanding to buy the casino part. A definitive agreement followed on November 7, 2025, subject to regulators and the City of Vancouver, which owns the land.
Fraser Downs, the other track
1976: Fraser Downs in Surrey began hosting harness racing. Its last races were run on May 2, 2025. August 15, 2025: the track closed abruptly after the City of Surrey ended the lease. The barns were demolished by December 18, 2025.
The casino at the track opened in November 2005 and is now Elements Casino Surrey. After a six-month, $11 million renovation, the former Fraser Downs Racetrack Casino reopened as Elements Casino. The reopening was reported on December 19, 2015. The casino publishes a simulcast racing lineup on its page; the latest linked calendar was for April 2026. Horse racing can also be watched and bet at teletheatres across BC.
In Metro Vancouver, the racebook at River Rock Casino Resort opens daily at 9 AM and closes after the last race. Starlight Casino New Westminster runs its racebook at MATCH Eatery & Public House, for thoroughbred and standardbred racing. Hours are Sunday 9 AM to 9 PM, and Monday and Tuesday 12 PM to 9 PM. Wednesday and Thursday run 9 AM to 9 PM, Friday and Saturday 9 AM to midnight. Holiday hours should be checked on each venue's own site.
